Why does Zinfandel pair with Burger?
Zinfandel was practically built for a burger. The wine's bramble-fruit sweetness rides alongside char from the grill, and its acid handles the fat and its medium tannins bind to the beef's proteins without dragging. You're not trying to be subtle here. A burger is direct. Zinfandel is direct. They meet in the middle and the meal makes sense.
Watch the alcohol though, Zin can run hot, 14.5–15.5 percent. If your burger's already rich, lean toward a cooler-climate Zin (Dry Creek, Russian River) to keep things from getting heavy.
How to serve Burger with Zinfandel
- 1.Old-vine Zinfandel can mean more concentration, but it's an unregulated term — check the producer's style, not just the label
- 2.Smashburger? Lean lighter, even a Beaujolais. Char is the star, don't overpower it
- 3.Bacon cheeseburger? Now you can go full bramble. Big Zin, big burger, big night
