Why does Chardonnay pair with Cheese?

Chardonnay is one of the most flexible wines for cheese because it spans so many styles. Unoaked Chardonnay (think Chablis) works with fresh goat cheese and young mozzarella. Oaked Chardonnay handles aged Gruyère, Comté, and even hard parmesan. The acid cuts richness. The body matches cheese weight. The oak adds a layer that aged cheese respects.

Brie and Camembert are trickier — they want a lighter, crisper Chardonnay or you'll flatten them. But a good oaked Chard with a wedge of aged cheddar is one of the easiest wins you can make at a cheese board.

How to serve Cheese with Chardonnay

  • 2.Oaked Chard pairs with hard, aged, and nutty cheeses
  • 3.Avoid Chardonnay with blue cheese altogether — blue wants sweetness (try Riesling or even Port)
