Touriga Nacional

Sip Tip

Touriga Nacional produces such small, thick-skinned berries with an unusually low juice-to-skin ratio that winemakers get far less liquid per ton than they would from most other varieties, which is a big part of why the wines end up so deeply colored and tannic.

Portugal's finest black grape builds wines with serious muscle. Touriga Nacional delivers deep colour, high tannin, high acidity, and intense dark-fruit concentration. It anchors the finest Port blends and stands at the centre of top-tier dry reds from the Douro.

You get blackberry and blackcurrant up front, then pepper and liquorice on the finish. High tannin and acidity give the wines serious structure and the ability to age for years. Oak aging is standard. This is a bold, complex red that few guests have encountered outside of Port.

What does Touriga Nacional taste like?

Dark berry fruit leads, with blackberry and blackcurrant at the forefront, followed by spice notes of pepper and liquorice. The colour is deep. Tannin and acidity are both high, giving the wine a firm, gripping structure. Alcohol sits at medium to high. Oak aging is typical, adding complexity to the dark-fruit core.

What food pairs with Touriga Nacional?

Firm tannin and bright acidity make this wine a strong match for rich, bold dishes. Pair it with braised lamb, hearty beef braises, or any slow-cooked red meat. Game dishes work beautifully. Aged, firm cheeses and cured-meat boards with assertive flavours make excellent matches.

How to serve Touriga Nacional

  • 1.Touriga Nacional ages beautifully; the high tannin and acidity give it decades of potential in bottle.
  • 2.Young examples can be astringent; give them five years minimum if you want the tannins to soften.
  • 3.Douro dry reds often blend several Port varieties, but single-varietal Touriga Nacional shows the grape's intensity most clearly.
  • 4.This is a low-yielding variety, so prices reflect scarcity and concentration, expect to pay accordingly.
  • 5.If a guest likes Barolo or northern Rhône Syrah, Touriga Nacional is an easy sell.
